Love Is In The Air
SHORT DESCRIPTION:
Rendered in Banksy’s characteristic signature stencilled style, Love Is In The Air depicts a young man, dressed as a militant, wearing a baseball cap and a bandana to mask the lower half of his face, in the middle of throwing a grenade or molotov cocktail.
An image that many Banksy buyers, fans, and art lovers will recognise, this piece by the famous street artist is a complex fusion of aggressive action and soft messaging – with the central figure dressed as a militant and covering his face, hurling a bunch of flowers out of shot as if it were a bomb or something more sinister.
With a simple but powerful message lying at the heart of this piece, Banksy uses art here to visualise the idea that only those who cover their faces and act with aggression are truly heard and acknowledged – and that aggression has become a disguise for more subtle actions and emotions.

The Story behind Banksy’s Love is in the Air
Before we get into the story behind this piece, it is worth noting that it also falls under the name Flower Thrower – immediately likening the action and the figure to some kind of flame thrower, which is, of course, a more sinister and deliberate act of violence.
And it is this visual linking which Banksy has deliberately created with Love Is In The Air – showing an apparently aggressive figure who is getting ready to throw an object which is, for all intents and purposes, a universal sign of love and affection.
So, is this a call for peace or a sign of the unrest which lies behind every action and movement in society?
For many Banksy buyers, this piece actually represents the idea that only those who threaten the peace are taken seriously – and so in order for a message to be truly heard and thoroughly understood, it must be carried out in a way that will evoke attention and attract interest. Everything from the face mask to the hat and the expression on the figure’s face screams aggression and fear.
The History of this Piece
Love is in the Air was created and released in 2003 as part of a collection of 500 original prints – 50 of which were signed while the rest remained unsigned. Having been in circulation for just under 20 years, this is one of the better known and more iconic expressions of violence, innocence, and war under Banksy’s artistic collection – and creates a visual representation of the artist’s own hatred of war and everything that it embodies.
This piece was once on the walls of many major cities around the world, and while the originals across London and beyond have long gone, the original prints are still in high demand.
The most famous wall art version of this print appeared in Jerusalem in 2003.
