More About Banksy’s ‘Applause’

As soon as you look at Banksy’s ‘Applause’ you notice that the piece is not the usual stencilled piece of art that the street artist usually creates. Rather, this piece is more detailed in terms of its visuals, layering the two central figures on top of what appears to be photographic depictions of war vessels.

As we often see in Banksy’s work, the pop of colour in the form of the vests that the air controllers are wearing serves to draw attention to them, their placement, and the sign that they are holding – which reads ‘Applause’.

The Story Behind Banksy’s ‘Applause’

Banksy’s work often boasts an underlying message – and more often than not that message is one that picks out and critiques various aspects of society, modern life, and modern attitudes. This piece is no different, with the air traffic controller holding the sign demonstrating the idea that war – a serious and hugely dangerous topic – is so often transformed into a story to report on by the media.

Despite first being produced and released in 2006, the timeless message behind this piece is such that it remains relevant even today – with the fact remaining that war, violence, and heartbreak are so often and so easily turned into a 5-minute story on a news channel or on social media.

On top of that, the way that Banksy has placed an ‘Applause’ sign in the hands of the air controller could indicate a further message – that the viewer, and thus the mass audience, has become a slave to the media and reacts in the way that they are told to by media influences.

The History of this Piece

The background image of this piece, showing the fighter jet and the warship, comes directly from a well-known image in which George W. Bush is deplaning a military bomber. The idea behind this use of a famous background scene was to really hit home the main message of the piece – that the media and many political figures spend too much time trying to glamourise war and turning war reporting into entertainment rather than a search for the truth.

As an unsigned print, this piece comes from a collection of just 500 copies in circulation.
